Santiago is interested in the biological processes underlying the acquisition of novel behaviors, the formation of habitual responses, and an organism’s ability to balance the two. His current work focuses on mapping changes in the mouse striatum at the molecular level to changes in behavior and the neural circuitry modulating it. Specifically, he is examining how neuronal signaling via the morphogen Sonic Hedgehog in the adult Basal Ganglia contributes to instrumental learning and habitual responding.
